A double welting foot is a specialized sewing machine presser foot featuring two distinct parallel grooves or tunnels on the underside that guides two cords wrapped in fabric simultaneously. The foot is designed to create two fabric covered cord (double piping) side-by-side in a single step. The grooves guide cords consistently and evenly spaced preventing slipping while a straight stitch (stitch length 2.5) runs down the center. The foot is commonly used in upholstery that is for finishing edges on sofas, cushion covers etc.
To sew double piping, snap on the double welting foot onto your low-shank compatible domestic sewing machine with a straight stitch and center needle position. Cut the bias fabric strips of about 4 to 6 cm or depending on the size of the cord. Roll the fabric over first piece of cord and then lie the second piece of cord right next to it and roll them together. Start to stitch from a few centimeters from the beginning. Another easy method involves sewing the first piece of cord in place and then placing the second cord in place to sew.
