Measurement

In order to construct garments with a precision fit accurate body measurement is necessary. The kind of garment determines the part of the body to be measured. A seamstress should have knowledge about the measurement of the body for proper cutting of the fabric. Some measurements are taken lengthwise while others widthwise. A good quality measuring tape (should not be stretchy) helps to take the body measurements in inches or centimeters.

Body Measurement

Specific body measurements are taken for better fitting, economical use of fabric and to save time. It is important firstly to determine the type of figure and size.

It is essential to acquire the information about the style and design of the garment to constructed from the customer.

While giving the measurements the person must stand straight in natural pose.

Measurements are taken in a sequence and taken twice to avoid any error or doubts.

The measurements are always taken by standing towards the right side of the customer.

The measurements take are not the clothing sizes. A seamstress will add 'ease' to these measurements (an ease is the number difference between body and the garment allowing room for movement).

 Methods Of Measurement

There are two methods of measurement:

1) Simple or Chest Measurement Method

      - It is a simple method in which the complete drafting and cutting is done according to the measurement of the chest.

2) Compound or Direct Measurement Method

  - In this measurement method the different body parts are measured directly. It involves:

Length measurements (such as shoulder to waist, length of the leg, total length etc.)

Breath measurements (such as shoulder, across chest, across back etc.)

Curves (such as chest, waist, hips etc. where measurement is taken by rounding the measuring tape.)
