A pleat is a fold of fabric formed by folding back the fabric upon itself creating an accordion and securing in place. Pleats add volume, shape and movement to garments. Pleats are commonly used in clothing and upholstery where a wide piece of fabric is gathered to a narrower circumference. The pleated cuff is a wide band of fabric that is pleated or gathered and is then stitched to the end of the sleeve.
