Blanket Stitch

Blanket stitch was traditionally used to secure the raw edges of the blanket. Also known as open buttonhole stitch the blanket stitch has many uses such as finishing the edges, applying applique, tack down hems, binding buttonholes and also as a decorative fill stitch.

Bring the needle up at 'a' and hold the thread with finger to the right of 'a' (working left-to-right). Insert the needle at 'b' and come back up at 'c' placing the needle's point over thread and pull through.

Pull the thread so that it lies tightly against thread at 'c' and repeat the process till the end of the row.
