Shirring Foot

A Shirring Presser Foot also known as a gathering foot is a specialized foot with a heavy metal piece on the front which helps the fabric gather as it is sewn. The shirring foot is used to achieve fullness, soft ruffles and textured effects in garments. It is also ideal for adding stretchy texture to necklines, waistbands etc. where elasticity is necessary.

Using shirring foot one can gather a single layer of fabric or join gathered fabric to a flat second layer simultaneously. This foot works best for soft light weight fabrics. The foot comes with a slot in the front which is open on the left and closed on the right. The bottom of the foot comes in contact with fabric to lock in folds as you stitch. For elasticated shirring, an elastic thread is used in the bobbin and a regular top thread.

To Use It: The gathering foot comes with its own shank so it's necessary to remove the machine's presser foot holder and then attach the gathering foot with the help of a screwdriver. To gather a single fabric set the machine to straight stitch and longest stitch length (around 5) and increase the upper thread tension (to 6 or 7) to control the tightness of gathers. Move the needle to left position with the widest seam allowance. Place the fabric to be gathered under the presser foot and start sewing at moderate speed.

To gather a fabric and attach it to a second flat fabric, first place the fabric to be gathered under the presser foot, lower the foot to hold it in place then insert the second fabric inside the slot to the left side of the foot. Lower the needle into the fabric and then start sewing

Stitch Guide Foot

A stitch guide foot or a Ruler foot is a presser foot that has a ruler-like metal guide with dents or lines that are precisely spaced (2mm increments). The guide helps in sewing to create accurate, evenly spaced parallel lines for topstitching, edge stitching and quilting, piecing and decorative accents. The foot comes with a wide opening along the front which allows one to use the option of variable needle positions for a straight stitch from far left to far right or anywhere in between. The grooved guidelines close to front also makes it suitable for both straight and curved edges. The flat foot also helps with smooth feeding of fabric layers.

To use it, remove the standard presser foot and snap on the stitch guide foot and position the fabric for the stitch line. To create a new stitch line up the previous stitch line a corresponding mark on the guide. The guide ensures that the new row of stitch is sewn at the exact same distance from the first, creating a desired uniform pattern. It can also be used with a twin needle.

Cuffs With Plackets

A placket is a finished opening or slit in a garment often made with a fabric strip where it fastens (with buttons, snaps or zippers). The cuffs with plackets are generally attached to the long end of the sleeve and requires a cuff-and-placket opening fastened snuggly around the wrist. Of this type of cuffs, the most popular types are the Shirt cuff and the French cuff. Each one is made up and attached to the sleeve at its edge. The Shirt cuff is sewn with its ends aligned to the underlap and overlap edges of the shirt placket, whereas the French cuff is sewn to the placket edges so that the ends of the cuff meet rather than lap, the cuff is cut wide to double back onto itself.

French Braid Maker

The French Braid Maker is a practical do it yourself styling tool which helps you to create beautiful French braids easily. The braiding tool stays hidden inside the hair to hold the French braids in place. The tool features a hook to hold hair at the crown along with grooves to guide sections of hair through creating a vein like specific look. These tools simplify the braiding process by securing the hair and guiding the user to cross strands in definite pattern, which is then followed by a traditional three-stranded braid at the ends. The length of the tool is 19.5cm and the width is about 2.5cm. The tool is flexible, light weight and easy to carry.

To use it, take a section of hair at the top of the head and secure the top part of the braiding tool by hooking it in place with the section of hair and hold down the hair underneath with bobby pins.

A section of hair is then taken from left crossed over the braiding tool and slid into the next groove.

The same process is repeated with a section of hair from the right side.

Continue the process down to the length of the tool. Once the hair has been pulled through all the slots, the remaining hair is divided into three parts to be braided in a traditional three- strand braid.

Prepare the fabric for the hem by folding it over once and then folding one more time followed by finger pressing or using a pin to secure the fold and then guide it into the funnel. As the fabric feeds through the foot the funnel of the presser foot rolls it over twice, creating a double fold, the needle then sews a straight stitch or in some cases zig-zag stitch through the folds to secure the hem. The hemmer foots are great to create neat, finished edges for skirts, dresses, scarves, hand kerchiefs, curtains and so on.
