Patch With Tab

The patch with tab is a patch pocket in which the tab and buttonhead is used for decoration purpose.

Inverted Pleat Pocket

The Inverted Pleat is the reverse of box pleat type in which a pleat is formed by bringing two folded edges towards each other or to a center point.

Slip Stitch

The slip stitch is nearly invisible stitch formed by slipping the thread under the fold of the fabric. It can be used to join two folded edges or one folded edge to a flat side.

An even slip stitch is used to join two folded edges.

Fasten thread to the needle and bring needle and thread out through one folded edge.

Then slip the needle through fold of opposite edge bring the needle out (about half inch) and draw the thread through.

Continue to slip the needle and thread through the opposite folded edges. This is the easy and fast way to stitch a seam. upholstery etc.

Post Box In A Patch

The post box in a patch is a combination of patch pocket and jetted pocket in which the entrance of the pocket is through the jet and the patch as a decorative element which is stitched all around.

Shirred Patch Pocket

The shirred patch is another variation of round patch pocket where the opening or head of the pocket is elasticated to create more space.

Bound Patch Pocket

The bound patch pocket is a variation of patch pocket which is curve shaped, gathered at the top edge and then a binding is applied to neaten it. The gathering gives it a unique look and provides little extra space in the pocket.

Cargo Pocket

Cargo pockets are large utility patch pockets with one or more pleats at the sides and often having a flap.

Box Pleat Pocket

The box pleat pocket is one of the commonly used pockets. The pleat (fold) is used to provide a decorative finish and to create more space within the pocket. The box pleat has two identical folds of fabric that are folded in opposite directions on the front of the pocket.

Zippered Patch Pocket

 A zip fastening is added to a patch pocket more as a designer purpose in garment. This type of pockets is widely used in bags and also as breast pockets.

Sewing Machine Needles

Sewing Machine Needles are the specialized needles used in a sewing machine. It must always be sharp and straight for smooth sewing.

                     

The needle thread and the fabric combination are very important. Using a wrong combination such as heavy fabric like denim with a small needle may bend or break the needle. The lower the thread number the thicker the thread and higher the needle number the thicker the needle. (For replacing the needle hold the needle with the left hand and using the screwdriver turn the needle clamp screw anti clockwise to remove the needle. Replace the new needle with the flat side toward the back of machine until it touches needle stopper and then tighten the needle clamp).

Patch With Flap

As a feature of design patch pockets can have a flap on the top. A flap is a flat thin piece of cloth attached to one side and covers the opening of the pocket.       

        

Patch Pockets

Patch pockets are created by sewing shaped pieces of fabric to the outside of a garment like a patch. This type of pockets can be designed in a number of shapes (square, pointed, angular, round etc.) and sizes. It may be unlined or lined and can be attached by machine or by hand. A decorative feature like embroidery or lace can be done to the pocket on children's outfits.

Pockets

A pocket is a pouch or cavity that is sewn into or onto a garment. The pockets can be decorative or functional or both. The well-designed pockets enhance the look of the clothing and functionally it's a storage place for items or hands.

While planning pockets it must be positioned so that it can be used efficiently. It must be large enough for intended use and also considering the movement of hand and arm.

Pockets can be divided into three main types:

Patch Pockets: The pocket which is applied to the outside of the garment.

Inset Pockets: The pocket is done by cutting a slit in the garment and stitching a pocket bag to the inside so that only the opening is visible.

Inseam Pockets: The opening of the pocket falls along the seam line of the garment where two fabric pieces overlap.

Bobbins

A bobbin is a part of sewing machine which is cylinder in shape and holds the thread. Bobbins come in many different sizes and may be of metal or plastic. Threading the lower portion of the machine involves the threading of the bobbin i.e., the machine makes the stitch by catching the bottom thread from the bobbin and top thread from the needle to form a stitch. Only use the bobbins that comes with the particular model of the machine as each sewing machine requires a specific type of bobbin.

French Curves

French curves are templates made from plastic, metal or wood used in manual drafting and to draw smooth curves of various radii in Fashion Designing. It comes in handy for pattern adjustment and common fitting. It is mainly used in measuring armhole, neckline, sleeve caps, pocket contours etc.

Plunge Neckline

The plunge Neckline is a very low neckline with a very low V shape at the front.

Zig Zag Neckline

Zig Zag is a pattern such that a line with sharp turns go in opposite directions at sharp angles. Similarly, the zig zag neckline consists of abrupt alternate right and left turns.

Tucked Neckline

 A Tuck is a stitched fold of fabric that is usually sewn vertically and parallel close together for the purpose of decoration. A very narrow tuck is called a pin tuck.

Handle

 The handle is used to carry the machine during transportation.

Foot Controller Jack Socket

The foot controller jack socket is used to connect the foot controller plug to the machine and connect the machine to power supply.

Presser Foot Lever

 The presser foot lever is used to raise and lower the presser foot.

• Sandpaper   

1. Use pencil or chalk to draw the shapes that you want on your jeans (patterned stencils help) and make sure the shapes are in right places.
2. Cut out the marked shape on the fabric.
3. Use pointed tip like pencil to gently pull away threads until the shape is frayed at the edges.

Slide the Flat Bed Attachment to the left to open it. The accessories can be stored in a compartment inside this Flat Bed Attachment.

 

Foot Controller

The foot controller is used to control the sewing speed and to stop and start sewing. By pressing the foot controller down lightly the machine will run at a low speed and by pressing it harder the speed of the machine will increase.

Camisole Neckline

Camisoles are undershirts and typically a basic neckline accompanied by spaghetti straps.

Gathered Neckline

The Gathered neckline consists of extra fabric that gathers around the neck. This neckline is also called as paper bag neckline as it resembles the look of gathered paper bag.

Double Straight Stitch

 A second line of straight stitches is worked to fill the spaces between your first row of stitches. 

In contrast to backstitch double straight stitch looks the same on the face and back of the fabric.

Henley Neckline

Basically, a round neckline consisting of a placket (3 to 5 in long) and usually have two to five buttons that is vertical opening at the neck fastened by a line of buttons.

The Henley neck Tees are collarless pullovers compared to polo ones and are typically long sleeved.

Buttonhole Fine Adjustment Screw

The buttonhole fine adjustment screw is used to adjust the stitching (too open or too tight) while sewing a buttonhole. Using a screwdriver provided with the model it is turned into '-' or '+' direction depending on the adjustment one needs.

Presser Foot

The presser foot is a small attachment used to hold the fabric flat as it is fed through the machine during sewing. One should turn off the machine before changing the presser foot and only use the one which is designed for your particular model of the machine.

Depending on the type of the presser foot holder the method of releasing the presser foot will vary (pulling it down vertically or pressing the button at the back of the presser foot)

Main Power And Sewing Light Switch

Turn "ON" the main power and sewing light switch to use the machine. One should take care not to turn on the machine while pressing down the foot controller so that it may cause personal injury or damage to the machine.

Pattern Selection Dial

Rotate the Pattern Selection Dial in either direction to choose the stitch you need.

In contrast the stitches are selected on a main screen in computerized sewing machines.

Reverse Sewing Lever

The lever is pushed to stitch in the opposite direction. This helps to lock the stitches and secure seams so that the stitches don't come apart (back tacking and reinforcing).

To reverse sew, push the lever and hold it in that position while lightly pushing the foot controller. Then release the reverse sewing lever to sew forward.

Upper Tension Control Dial

This dial controls the tension of the upper thread. The tension of the thread will affect the quality of the stitches.

If the upper tension is too tight, loops will appear on the surface of the fabric therefore the tension is reduced by turning the upper tension-control dial to a lower number.

If the upper tension is too loose loops will appear on the back of the fabric therefore the tension is increased by turning the upper tension-control dial to a higher number.

Thread take-up lever

The thread from the spool is passed from thread guide and then through the thread take-up lever. This lever controls the flow and movement of the spool thread.

During the threading of the machine, if the take-up lever is lowered the upper thread cannot be passed through the take-up lever. Therefore, one should raise the needle by turning the handwheel clockwise i.e., towards you so that the mark on the wheel points up.

Thread Cutter

 Pass the thread through the thread cutter to cut them.

Thread Guide

The thread guide is used while winding the thread onto the bobbin and then in threading the machine. There may be one or more thread guides depending on the model of the machine.

Bobbin Winder

The bobbin winder winds the thread into the bobbin for use as the lower thread (that is load thread from a larger spool to small round spool).

Spool Pin

Spool pin are for thread spool to rotate freely during the sewing process. Depending on the model it can be horizontal or vertical in place. The thread spool sits right on the spool pin.

In modern machines an extra spool pin can be placed in the hole on the top of the machine so that a second spool of thread can be placed for sewing with the twin needle.

Handwheel/Balancewheel

 It is a round wheel located at upper right of a sewing machine. This wheel controls the movement of the thread take up liver and needle. The handwheel must always be turned towards your direction.

To work with a sewing machine, one should know the operation and maintenance of it. To know about the function of sewing machine, knowledge of its different parts is necessary. Although some special parts are only available for certain models (such as needle threader or quick set bobbin) knowing the main parts of sewing machine is essential.

Halter Neckline

The term halter implies having a neckline consisting of cord, band or strap of that kind which extends around the neck and forms a part of the front of the sleeveless and backless bodice. The name comes from livestock halters. This neckline is great for showcasing shoulders and suits most of body types with medium or full bust. In a variation of this style, the straps can also be tied behind the neck. Swimsuits, dresses and tops are always in trend with this style. Either a strapless or halter bra is worn with this style.

Surplice Neckline

This style of neckline is formed by one side of the garment overlapping the other (like a bathrobe). For a dress the lower layer is usually sewn to the top layer just under the bust. This diagonally crossed neckline creates a visual deep V shape.

Illusion Neckline

The illusion neckline combines a low neckline (usually strapless) with a semi-transparent fabric (lace or sheer fabric) along the top part creating a finished higher neckline. This style gives a gorgeous and strapless feel but with the more coverage. This neckline is widely used in wedding dresses. The sheer fabric can have embellishment on it.
